The inheritance between religious and patriarchal traditions through the lens of thenovel So Long a Letter by Mariama Bâ and the film Inshallah a Boy by Amjad AlRasheed

Abstract

More than four decades after the publication of Mariama Ba's epistolary novel, So Long
a Letter, Amjad AL-RASHEED presents the film Inshallah a Boy, a realistic drama. Two
different media that intersect at the crossroads where, among other things, issues such as
inheritance and their legal implications are debated. This article analyzes and explains the ins
and outs of discriminatory provisions that legitimize the unequal distribution of inheritance to
the detriment of women. The conclusions show that the injustices being addressed stem from
a desire to perpetuate customary practices within a patriarchal framework, far removed from the spirit of Islamic precepts.
