Abstract

The discourses of madness that we read in the Arab-Islamic heritage have multiple social,
political and cultural functions. We have referred to some of them previously, and that some writers
have taken this sound as a means to express their ideas and aspirations. Therefore, we can say that madness, whether on the subject matter or in terms of discourse, occupied an important place in the
ancient Arab-Islamic heritage. This is evidenced by the narrations and texts left by the ancients. This
is what led contemporary Arab researchers to pay close attention to it, and to try to read it in light of
contemporary critical approaches. Among these critical approaches employed by the contemporary
Arab researcher was that presented by the contemporary French philosopher Michel Foucault. The question that imposes itself on us is: What is the value of this reading adopted by many Arab
researchers in their study of Arab-Islamic heritage, especially those whom we stopped with in this
research, whether by analysis or reference only?
